Weathering Six Years of Market Crashes, a Dormant Whale Suddenly Transfers $377 Million in BTC, With Six-Year Position Gains Nearing 10x

TechFlow Summary: A Bitcoin address that has been holding its position since March 2020 moved all 4,581.94 BTC in a single transaction on October 12, worth approximately $377 million. This address survived the pandemic crash, the Terra implosion, the FTX collapse, and the Trump tariff shock, yet chose to act at this specific moment, making its signal implications for market sentiment noteworthy.

According to on-chain data, a Bitcoin wallet that had been holding 4,581.94 BTC since March 2020 transferred its entire balance to five new addresses on October 12, moving approximately $377 million worth of Bitcoin in a single transaction. The transfer was confirmed in block 971,126 at approximately 18:37 UTC, when Bitcoin was trading around $82,350.

Four receiving addresses each received exactly 1,000 BTC, while the fifth received 581.94 BTC. The transaction paid a fee of 732 satoshis, a satoshi being one hundred millionth of a Bitcoin, equivalent to roughly 60 cents. As of block 971,279 on October 13, none of the five addresses have spent anything, and it remains unclear who controls the wallet or what will happen to the coins.

The wallet received these coins on March 3, 2020, with that transaction splitting a balance of 5,081.95 BTC into three parts, sending 250 BTC to each of two other addresses. At approximately $8,830 per Bitcoin at the time, the 4,581.95 BTC entering this wallet were worth about $40.5 million. Since then, the value of these bitcoins has nearly grown tenfold.

This wallet stands as a model of patience. Since these coins arrived, they weathered multiple market shocks, beginning with the pandemic crisis, shortly after the wallet made its initial deposit. During that period, the value of these coins plummeted from approximately $40.5 million to around $17.6 million.

This was followed by Tesla's suspension of Bitcoin payments and China's crackdown on mining in May 2021, which drove the wallet's value down from a peak of approximately $291 million in April to $131 million in June. The collapses of Terra, Celsius, and FTX in 2022 slashed the value to roughly $71 million, erasing about $239 million from the November 2021 high, coinciding with Federal Reserve rate hikes that dragged the S&P 500 index down by about 25% and pushed Bitcoin to a two-year low.

The impact of Trump's tariffs similarly shattered the market. Bitcoin dropped 54% from its all-time high of $124,728 to $57,735 before recovering to its current price. The wallet's value fell from $571.5 million to approximately $265 million during that sell-off, but overall, long-term holding since day one has yielded nearly a tenfold net gain.

The address also accumulated numerous dust transactions, which are transfers moving only hundreds to thousands of satoshis where the sending cost is nearly zero. On-chain data shows that between August 2020 and May 2026, there were a total of 22 such deposits, ranging from 546 to 6,953 satoshis, each worth less than $6 at current prices. Sixteen of these originated from batch transactions that paid out to between 87 and 610 addresses simultaneously.

One deposit fits the pattern of address poisoning, where an attacker generates an address mimicking the first and last characters of a real address, hoping someone will mistakenly copy it later. On January 28, 2025, an address starting with 18VpNbPc and ending with pQ9x sent 600 satoshis to this wallet, sharing the same first three and last four characters as the whale address.

The funds for this similar address came from a transaction on November 12, 2024, that simultaneously paid out to 1,401 outputs, and was emptied after that single payment was made. All other senders used bc1 addresses, which look completely different from this wallet's legacy 18-prefix address.

The whale did not take the bait.

Large holders of Bitcoin, so-called whales, move their coins for various reasons including privacy and security. Analysts and traders worry that such transfers could signal impending sell-offs, as holders might feel motivated to cash in substantial gains.

That said, transferring coins from dormant wallets is not unprecedented. Back in July 2025, an entity moved 80,000 BTC that had been sleeping for 14 years, worth $8.6 billion, marking the largest single-day movement of tokens aged 10 years or older. Ten days later, another Satoshi-era wallet sent 40,009 BTC (approximately $4.7 billion) to Galaxy, which subsequently stated it executed a sale worth roughly $9 billion on behalf of a Satoshi-era client.

As of October 13, the original address still holds a residual dust balance of 23,288 satoshis, worth roughly $19, while the five receiving addresses hold the full 4,581.94 BTC.
