Starknet May Break Away From Ethereum: Over 93.5% of Votes Support Exploring Transition to Quantum-Resistant L1, Technical Whitepaper Set for November Release

STRK will continue to be the only native token, and the cross-chain bridge will remain permanently open.

On October 22, 2026, the official team of Starknet, a leading Ethereum Layer 2 scaling network, announced the results of a governance poll marking a significant strategic turning point.
During a 7-day review on the Snapshot off-chain governance voting platform, the community overwhelmingly supported a feasibility study on transitioning from an Ethereum Layer 2 network to an independent post-quantum Layer 1 mainnet with over 93.5% of the voting power, as more than 2,800 independent active wallets participated in the vote.
In response to this overwhelming public sentiment, StarkWare co-founder and CEO Eli Ben-Sasson announced on social platform X that the core engineering team plans to officially release the draft whitepaper for the post-quantum L1 architecture in November 2026, subjecting it to comprehensive open review by global developers and academia.
The Post-Quantum Paradox: Why Complete Immunity Is Unattainable While Remaining on Ethereum L2
The deep-rooted reason behind Starknet's intention to build its own chain lies in the irreconcilable systemic generational gap between the ultimate cryptographic security it pursues and the existing Ethereum architecture.
According to the technical documentation disclosed on the Starknet official portal, the network has been renowned since its inception for its STARK zero-knowledge proof technology. Its underlying mathematical proofs are entirely built upon hash-function-based cryptography, making it naturally immune to quantum attack threats posed by Shor's algorithm against discrete logarithms and elliptic curves.
Supported by its native account abstraction framework, end users can even autonomously switch to adopting post-quantum signature mechanisms at the application layer without requiring hard fork upgrades to the underlying protocol.
The fatal security flaw lies precisely within Ethereum itself. As Starknet currently operates under a Rollup architecture, its on-chain verification contracts for state validity proofs and final data availability (DA) are deeply dependent on the underlying Ethereum mainnet.
On the eve of mature quantum computing, as long as Ethereum's own consensus signature system and execution-layer elliptic curve algorithms have not completed a network-wide post-quantum reconstruction, attackers could dismantle Ethereum's mainnet settlement layer and compromise any Layer 2 network attached to it. This structural fate of attempting to remain secure while being constrained by external dependencies has driven the development team to seek building an underlying public chain with complete sovereignty.
Sovereign Architecture and Governance Gates: The STRK Tokenomics Model and Cross-Chain Commitments
In the face of heated discussions across the ecosystem, the StarkWare official team emphasized that this poll serves as authorization for preliminary technical exploration and does not indicate that the network has officially initiated a fork or independent migration.
Whether it truly moves toward an independent mainnet in the future still requires rigorous engineering validation and must be decided through a final proposal with on-chain execution power initiated by all STRK holders.
Addressing the community's high concerns regarding asset dilution and liquidity fragmentation, the Starknet Foundation has made two key commitments.
First, regardless of whether the final technical route chooses to continue as an Ethereum expansion layer or build an independent chain, STRK will serve as the sole network-native token and gas-consuming asset, with absolutely no new tokens being issued.
Second, the bidirectional asset bridge channels between Ethereum and Starknet will remain permanently open; even if it evolves into an independent mainnet in the future, the network will maintain seamless interoperability and asset flow support for the Ethereum ecosystem, preventing severe attrition of existing application ecosystems.
Sovereign Awakening: From Ethereum Vassal to Independent Post-Quantum Public Chain Competition
This cutting-edge exploration by Starknet marks a critical step for a leading Rollup in pursuing system sovereignty and long-term security barriers.
For a long time, the industry mainstream consensus has always regarded Ethereum as an unshakable global settlement hub. As the demands of various Layer 2 networks diverge continuously regarding governance autonomy, protocol revenue distribution, and the evolution of frontier cryptography, debates over whether the ultimate fate of L2 is vassalage or a sovereign public chain are heating up again.
If Starknet ultimately succeeds in building an independent L1 that combines high-efficiency STARK throughput with native post-quantum consensus, it will not only break free from the slow upgrade cycles dragged down by massive historical baggage, but also seize a strategic position in the geopolitical games and financial defense competition where quantum technology moves toward practicality over the next decade.
With the imminent release of the technical whitepaper draft in November, the global cryptography community and the Ethereum ecosystem will witness an open scrutiny regarding the ultimate architecture of the blockchain's post-quantum era.
