Wall Street Analyst: Binance Hack Has Limited Impact on Crypto Industry, Sell-off May Offer Buying Opportunity
October 30: Cantor Fitzgerald, TD Cowen, and Compass Point stated in Friday research reports that Binance's approximately $6.3 billion theft incident, while a severe blow to the platform, currently offers no sufficient reason to believe it will threaten the broader crypto market, and related sell-offs may present buying opportunities. At the time of reporting, Coinbase and Strategy shares both fell about 12%, while Robinhood dropped about 9%.
Cantor Fitzgerald analyst Ramsey El-Assal believes the industry's rapid response to the incident reflects enhanced ecosystem adaptability. Tether froze over $1.5 billion in stolen assets, Circle froze about $800 million, and Ripple froze about $200 million. Binance said a total of approximately $3 billion in assets had been frozen, but freezing does not mean the funds have been recovered. El-Assal expects crypto stocks such as Coinbase, Robinhood, and Strategy to recover after the initial panic subsides, stating: "We will buy the dip."
TD Cowen analyst Lance Vitanza believes the attack exposed a security weakness at Binance, not a problem with Bitcoin or the underlying technology of other crypto assets. The attack appears to have targeted the exchange's transaction signing infrastructure, not the Bitcoin network itself. He believes the sell-off may provide investors with an opportunity to increase holdings of Bitcoin and shares of companies that hold Bitcoin.
Compass Point analysts Ed Engel and Michael Donovan believe Binance has sufficient liquidity to cover the shortfall. The assets they cited include $1.2 billion in excess USDT reserves, about $1.2 billion in BTC reserves, and over $1.5 billion in USDC treasury assets.
However, Compass Point cautions that the incident's follow-on effects are not without risk. Binance compensating customers could pressure stablecoin supply, and withdrawals may increase once decentralized lending markets reopen. The incident could also drive business to competing platforms such as Coinbase, Bullish, and Hyperliquid. For Bitcoin, the firm is watching the $75,000 to $77,000 range; a break below could put the recent rebound at risk.
