Musk: Terafab plans to achieve chip mass production by 2028

Oct 21, 08:39

On October 21, Terafab, a chip manufacturing joint venture established by SpaceX and Tesla, plans to achieve mass production in the third quarter of 2028, Elon Musk said Tuesday on a SpaceX conference call. "I'm putting a lot of error bars on this timeline because we're not sure we can actually achieve this," Musk said of the timeline. The timeline is a rough plan for the project, which aims to provide 1 terawatt of computing power per year for artificial intelligence and robotics, a timeline Musk himself called "very aggressive." In the United States, building a cutting-edge logic chip factory typically takes three years or more. Musk said that in internal planning, Terafab's goal is to have its first test chip using static random-access memory (SRAM) circuits operating normally around May or June of next year at the Terafab R&D center in Austin.
