ChatGPT Classic Officially 'Retires', Service to End in Late January 2027
November 3 — According to ITHome, OpenAI issued an announcement on November 2 notifying users still using ChatGPT Classic that the legacy desktop app will end service on January 30, 2027. After opening the app, users will see a deprecation prompt; clicking the banner takes them to the download page for the new ChatGPT. Full chat history will migrate with the account, and users can continue their existing conversations in the new app.
ChatGPT Classic is the former desktop version of ChatGPT, which was renamed after OpenAI launched a new desktop app integrating Codex and ChatGPT in July this year. The new app consists of three parts: Chat, ChatGPT Work and Codex. OpenAI also plans to open a combined Chat-and-Work test to a small group of users in the coming weeks, and to merge the usage allowances for ChatGPT and Codex into a shared quota.
