Fraudulent Ledger Websites Climb to Top of Google Search; Users Beware of Seed Phrase Phishing Risks
On October 10, Bitcoin News disclosed that security researchers identified fake websites and applications impersonating the hardware wallet brand Ledger appearing at the top of Google search results. The phishing sites are designed to deceive users into entering their 24-word seed phrases. Data indicates that these counterfeit pages have received over one million visits in the past 30 days.
A report released by cybersecurity firm Zscaler in September revealed that malicious Google ads disguised as official Ledger pages are redirecting users to fraudulent wallet verification sites. Concurrently, Ledger is investigating a wallet theft case with estimated losses of $86 million involving customers of Southeast Asian distributor CryptoBilis. Security experts caution that hardware wallet recovery seed phrases must never be entered on any web platform.
