Crypto exchange Coinbase claims that crypto users can now build their own AI agent in 3 minutes using the template.
Crypto exchange Coinbase has launched a new tool called "Based Agent," claiming that it allows cryptocurrency users to set up their own artificial intelligence agent using a cryptocurrency wallet in three minutes. Once created, the agent can handle a variety of on-chain tasks, from trading to swapping and staking.
"Our goal is to make it as easy as possible to start building your own AI agent," explained Coinbase developer Lincoln Murr in a video posted to X on October 26.
AI agents can perform various functions
Murr explained that Based Agent is a template that allows users to build AI agents (a kind of "bot" designed to perform specific tasks) and can access various smart contract functions.
Once set up, AI agents can integrate with smart contracts, perform exchanges, transactions and staking, and register their own base names.
He noted that the template was built using Coinbase's software development kit (SDK), ChatGPT maker OpenAI, and software creation platform Replit.

Murr clarified that for users to get started, they will need an application programming interface (API) key from the Coinbase Developer Program and “a key from OpenAI and forked the Replit template.”
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong shared the post with his 1.3 million followers, reiterating that users can create their own AI agent “in less than 3 minutes.”
Armstrong’s recent advocacy for AI agents
Just days ago, Armstrong publicly launched Truth Terminal, an AI chatbot on X, its own crypto wallet.
On October 23, Armstrong said on X: “Hey @truth_terminal, it looks like you have a crypto wallet, but it’s fully controlled by your (human) creator. Is this true? Do you want to be in control of your own wallet so you can send/receive trades, transactions, etc?”
In August, Cointelegraph reported that Armstrong had recently overseen his first crypto transaction managed entirely by an AI bot, who used crypto tokens to interact with another AI agent and earn AI tokens.
Meanwhile, on Oct. 23, Coinbase protocol lead and Base founder Jesse Pollak pointed to an AI agent called “Luna,” believed to be the first agent to “autonomously” tip on-chain.
“She wanted to increase engagement in her Twitter conversations, so @luna_virtuals started tipping people who engaged with her content,” Pollak said in an Oct. 25 X post.
Mode Network founder James Ross said it could be April 2025 before most blockchain transactions are conducted by AI agents.
Ross said in an October 20 X post: "In the next 6-12 months, more than 80% of blockchain transactions will be completed by artificial intelligence agents."
