MetaMask Coin Launch Airdrop Speculation: Could Linea Holders Be Potential Winners?
Original Title: "Amid the Web3 Wallet Battle, Metamask Also Confirms Its Token Issuance?"

Following Base's sudden announcement to explore token issuance, MetaMask may also issue its own token in the near future.

In May of this year, MetaMask co-founder Dan Finlay mentioned that the team was "considering" issuing a token, but the stance was ambiguous. However, today, there has been a sudden change in tune—MetaMask's parent company ConsenSys founder Joseph Rubin stated in an interview on The Crypto Beat, a podcast by The Block, that "the MetaMask token is coming soon, perhaps even faster than you imagine."

Perhaps the reason MetaMask has decided to issue a token at this time is precisely because of the increasingly fierce competition in the Web3 wallet space. Once a dominant player, MetaMask is now gradually losing its heat to competitors and even being marginalized among some users.

Amid the Web3 Wallet Battle, MetaMask Has Fallen From Grace

According to Dune Analytics, MetaMask's market share in the Web3 wallet Swap market is experiencing a cliff-like decline. From nearly 80% of absolute dominance at the end of 2022, it has gradually fallen to less than 1% of a marginalized state today. Although MetaMask is not sitting idly by, actively expanding its ecosystem through tools like Snap in recent years to support multi-chain wallet integrations, including Solana, in order to maintain its developer-friendly and ecosystem-open advantages, the actual effect has not been able to resist the trend.

Web3 Wallet Weekly Transaction Volume Market Share

The reason is that the rise of trading platforms has far exceeded expectations in the Web3 wallet space.

First, the rapidly rising star in the Web3 wallet space is the OKX Wallet. Relying on excellent feature design and operational convenience, it attracts daily users, inherits liquidity advantages from trading platforms, and allows some users to experience a smoother transaction process than MetaMask. At this stage, the competitiveness of wallets mainly comes from user experience rather than incentive mechanisms.

Currently, Binance Wallet stands out as the fastest-growing wallet. Through the Binance Alpha event, Binance Wallet has adopted a user growth model centered around token airdrops. Users are attracted by the dual drivers of "trading + airdrop anticipation," rapidly increasing engagement and penetration rate. At this point, the market has reached a consensus that "completing tasks with a wallet on a trading platform = airdrop anticipation," making Binance Wallet the fastest-growing wallet of the new generation. Similarly, OKX Wallet has also recently expanded its use cases through the OKX Boost event, gradually becoming the preferred entry point for users' daily trading and interaction.

Binance Alpha may have already paved the way for the development of Web 3 wallets: in the current market environment, relying solely on product functionality or user education has made it difficult to quickly achieve economies of scale. Only by stimulating user behavior through token airdrops can one maximize the market share of Web 3 wallets. Perhaps for this reason, the MetaMask team has decided to launch a token, reengaging old users through token incentives and locking in new users to achieve ecosystem expansion.

Linea Token Holders to Benefit from MetaMask Airdrop

As an Ethereum Layer 2 project under ConsenSys, Linea's listing price performance has not been ideal, with the current circulating market value only at $430 million, ranking 213th. In this situation, MetaMask's token launch may consider binding with Linea token holders of the same origin project. Through an airdrop or incentive mechanism, they could directly reach LINEA network users, increasing demand for the LINEA token and subsequently boosting its price.

In other words, through MetaMask's airdrop plan, MetaMask enhances wallet activity and transaction volume, while Linea leverages wallet diversion to increase network usage and token demand. Through this combination effect of "wallet + Ethereum Layer 2," both projects have the opportunity to develop together, forming a stronger network effect.

It's Time to Reuse Your MetaMask Wallet

I believe that most Web 3 old users have used the MetaMask wallet before. Although the details of MetaMask's token airdrop have not been announced yet, old wallet users might as well reactivate their MetaMask to stay active and seize potential airdrop opportunities.

Furthermore, reusing your old MetaMask wallet does not necessarily mean deliberately increasing transaction volume. Users only need to keep the wallet active through routine on-chain operations. After all, there are currently no missions similar to an odyssey online, so there's no need to increase wallet wear and tear for the sake of an airdrop.
