Korean Media: South Korea's Memory Dominance to Continue Until 2031
August 5th - According to South Korean media reports, a forecast indicates that South Korea will maintain its leading position in the global memory chip market until 2031, thanks to heavy investments from companies such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. However, the demand for High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) is expected to rapidly shift from NVIDIA's graphics processing units (GPUs) to AI accelerators developed in-house by major tech firms like Google. Josephine Lo, an industry analyst at the French market research firm Yole Group, stated at the 2026 Future Memory and Storage Conference held in California on August 4th that South Korea will remain at the forefront of the memory industry until 2031. Lo pointed out that South Korea plans to double its wafer capacity in the next five years, with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix increasing their investments.
The analysis suggests that as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix simultaneously expand the capacity and technology development of next-generation DRAM (including HBM) and NAND, South Korea's advantage will continue to be maintained. (Jinse)
