CoreWeave seeks insurance funding to support AI expansion, chip financing scale has exceeded $35 billion
October 14: Nvidia-backed AI cloud service provider CoreWeave is seeking to attract the massive capital pools of insurance companies to lower its financing costs for purchasing AI chips and building infrastructure. CoreWeave co-founder and head of financing Brannin McBee said that if the company can get more chip-collateralized debt rated investment grade and ultimately improve its own credit rating, it will have the opportunity to enter the insurance capital market. He said the insurance industry's capital scale is "almost infinite" because "all the money sitting in insurance capital pools is one of the largest sources of funds in the world."
Earlier this year, CoreWeave obtained an $8.5 billion loan backed by Nvidia chips and a long-term usage contract signed with Meta. CoreWeave's next step is to attract insurance companies to buy loans backed by lower-rated customers, such as financing related to AI labs. Since the beginning of this year, the company has raised more than $35 billion through chip-collateralized loans, high-yield bonds, convertible bonds, and stock offerings. As of the end of June, the company's debt and lease obligations were approximately $52 billion.
