OpenAI acquires biopharmaceutical company Orchestra Bio: Letting AI take over the tedious processes of new drug R&D.
Beating AI News Flash: OpenAI has announced the acquisition of Orchestra Bio, a biotechnology company founded 4 years ago, integrating its team and technology into the life sciences platform Rosalind.
Orchestra had previously raised approximately $20 million, with investors including a16z, Atria, and 8VC.
Orchestra's core product is a drug development agent system. It is not directly responsible for inventing new drugs, but rather helps pharmaceutical companies manage R&D progress, coordinate different teams, and track clinical trial schedules. For example, a failed batch of drug manufacturing could lead to delays in clinical trials. The agent can automatically identify affected tasks and milestones, aggregate information, and propose adjustment plans, which are then decided upon by researchers.
OpenAI launched GPT-Rosalind in April this year, specifically designed to handle biology and chemistry problems, and subsequently rolled out a supporting research workbench. This acquisition will fill in the project management segment of drug R&D, allowing AI to go beyond analyzing experimental data and further participate in downstream R&D processes.
