32,000-star DeepSeek plugin dsh-our-free-model threatened by mysterious 'lawyer's letter': demands repository deletion within 7 days, yet signature left blank

Oct 21, 18:28

Beating AI News Flash: The DeepSeek open-source plugin project dsh-our-free-model, which has about 32,000 stars on GitHub, suddenly received a 20,000-character "lawyer's letter."

The poster claims to be commissioned by the rights holders of WorkBuddy and CodeBuddy, accusing the project of reverse-engineering Tencent's official client, bypassing interface verification, and using free credits to call AI models. The letter demands that the developer stop the relevant conduct within 3 days and delete the entire repository within 7 days, or face litigation and regulatory reports.

However, the project had already removed the two Tencent channels at 10:29 a.m. that same day. At 16:21 p.m., another contributor submitted a PR attempting to bypass Tencent's client verification by rewriting the request content and restore model calls. About 39 minutes later, the "lawyer's letter" appeared. The contributor then voluntarily withdrew the PR, and the relevant code was not merged.

Somewhat absurdly, the letter did not fill in the law firm, the handling lawyer, the authorized rights holder, or contact information, nor was it signed or sealed. The posting account was not registered until October 16. The letter also claimed that the developer submitted code attempting restoration only 3 minutes after removing the Tencent channels. But public GitHub records show that the relevant PRs were actually nearly 6 hours apart.

At present, there is no official confirmation from Tencent that it sent the letter. A large number of developers in the community have questioned its authenticity and suspect that someone is using the name of a lawyer's letter to exert pressure.
