CME Group plans tradable index product on AI model token spending with Silicon Data
October 21 — According to Bloomberg, CME Group plans to work with AI index startup Silicon Data to launch a tradable product based on AI model token spending. The product will be based on its large language model (LLM) token index, weighting token prices of different AI models by usage. Silicon Data CEO Carmen Li said the market already has a fairly good understanding of GPU compute costs, but still lacks insight into the consumption layer of the AI economy.
In August this year, the two parties announced plans to launch a futures product based on GPU rental costs. Silicon Data said the new token index product is planned for launch in the coming months, but still requires regulatory approval. The company's LLM token spending index, after declining over the summer, is currently hovering near the lows seen since it began publication last December, which may reflect users shifting from high-end models to lower-priced alternatives.
