Mediator proposes US-Iran 5-day mutual concession deal: reopening the strait in exchange for lifting the naval blockade

October 27 - According to a report by The New York Times on the evening of October 26 Beijing time, amid widespread concerns that the US and Israel may soon launch a new round of attacks on Iran, senior representatives from Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan held talks with Iranian officials in Tehran on Monday. The visit is the latest move in a flurry of diplomatic efforts by regional mediators.

Gulf officials said Monday's talks were aimed at supporting the efforts of Qatari and Pakistani mediators to urge Iran to show sufficient flexibility to reach a diplomatic solution with the United States. Two diplomats said Qatari mediators have been pushing for a US-Iran agreement in which both sides would make a series of concessions within five days. Under part of the proposed concession arrangement, Iran would reopen the Strait of Hormuz to allow commercial vessels to pass, while the US would lift its naval blockade on Iranian ports. The main obstacle to reaching an agreement lies in determining when each side would make its concessions. They added that mediators have been pressing Iran to make concessions on its nuclear program in the early stages of the agreement's implementation.
