US Big Tech's AI spending commitments exceed $3 trillion, with Google topping the list at over $1 trillion

October 31 — Five tech giants—Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, Amazon, and Oracle—have committed to investing more than $3 trillion over the coming years in AI infrastructure buildout, covering data center leases, construction, energy, and equipment procurement.

Among them, Google disclosed related spending commitments exceeding $1 trillion, nearly 8 times higher than a year ago; Meta's future spending commitments exceed $800 billion, slightly less than half of which comes from data center leases not yet commenced, with payment terms of up to 30 years.

Data shows that the five companies' combined future lease commitments total approximately $1.3 trillion, with other procurement commitments at about $1.9 trillion. However, disclosure standards vary across companies, and some commitments also involve content licensing, consumer hardware, and other businesses, so they cannot all be counted as data center spending.

Whether AI infrastructure investment can deliver commensurate returns has become a market focus. Major tech companies such as Alphabet and Meta are facing pressure on free cash flow, while Oracle has already fallen into negative free cash flow due to AI data center investment and plans to reduce upfront costs through vendor financing and customer prepayments, targeting a return to positive free cash flow by 2028.
