The cost of living in the United States remains persistently high, and the Democratic Party has pledged to prioritize addressing livelihood issues rather than seeking retaliation against Trump.
November 4 — After the U.S. midterm elections, the high cost of living has become the top policy issue for Democrats as they are about to take control of Congress. Relevant data shows that since Trump's second term began, the U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) has cumulatively risen by about 5.4%, food prices have increased by about 4.5%, and gasoline prices have surged by about 39%.
Multiple polls before the election showed that about 90% of respondents considered the cost of living an important factor influencing their vote, and nearly two-thirds of voters attributed inflation to the Trump administration's policies. Republicans also lost control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives in this midterm election due to voters' dissatisfaction with prices and economic pressure.
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who is expected to become Speaker of the House in January next year, said that after Democrats take control of Congress, the focus should be on lowering the cost of living rather than seeking revenge against Trump. He pointed out that the American people want Democrats to effectively address the problem of excessively high living costs, not to engage in political retaliation against Trump. Democrats won the election on policy proposals to improve affordability of living, and now they need to fulfill their governing responsibilities around this goal.
