Arthur Hayes Publishes Article Outlining Flop Network's Compute Pricing and Derivatives Proposal

Oct 27, 08:37

October 27 — Arthur Hayes published an article outlining his vision for Flop Network, describing FLOP as "food for AI agents" that can be directly redeemed for compute (FLOPS). He believes that if Flop becomes the payment network for AI agents, the FLOP/compute exchange rate will become the global benchmark for spot compute. He noted that compute currently lacks a unified global price, while chip and AI token prices are all derivatives of compute, so the focus should be on pricing compute itself.

Hayes proposed that Flop Network produce a block every second, with receipts within each block recording the latency, floating-point operation volume and transaction fees of inference tasks, and that the $FLOP/compute exchange rate be calculated on this basis. The network supports reserving compute to be delivered up to 30 days in the future, standardized into tradable Flop Compute Units (FCU), similar to deliverable forwards. On this basis, he designed cash-settled FRCR quarterly futures and perpetual contracts, margined in USD, allowing market makers to synthesize long or short exposure by buying or supplying FCUs and rolling them forward. Hayes said this will make Flop Network's spot and forward compute prices a global benchmark, providing a blueprint for the compute derivatives market in the era of AI agents.
