Digital Ruble First-Month Account Openings Exceed Estimates by Nearly Four Times
On October 7 that, according to Cointelegraph, the first-month adoption rate of the Russian Central Bank's digital currency (digital ruble) has far exceeded expectations. Zulfiya Kakhrumanova, Deputy Governor of the Russian Central Bank, revealed that following the project's launch on September 1, over 220,000 accounts were opened in the first month, significantly surpassing the initial target of 60,000.
This accelerated progress stems partly from Western sanctions severing some of Russia's global financial ties, disrupting payment channels with major trading partners such as China and India. The promotion of the digital ruble is viewed as a key initiative to counter financial isolation and seek alternative payment solutions.
Meanwhile, BRICS nations, including Russia, are exploring interoperability technology among member central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) to support cross-border trade settlements. According to Reuters last month, at the 18th BRICS Summit, leaders have explicitly supported expanding local currency settlements and connecting member CBDC systems.
