Crypto Industry's Heavy Backing of Republicans Alienates Democrats, Creating Obstacles for Legislative Progress
On October 8, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo stated during a conversation with OKX CEO Star Xu at Token2049 that the crypto industry's heavy tilt toward the Republican Party has created a sense of alienation among Democrats, and that passing federal crypto legislation like the CLARITY Act requires bipartisan support. Data shows that crypto PACs contributed $54.3 million to Republicans and $26.2 million to Democrats in the 2026 election cycle, with an additional $23.2 million spent opposing Democratic candidates.
Cuomo also denied that Democrats are inherently opposed to cryptocurrency, arguing that crypto technology strongly aligns with Democratic ideals regarding financial inclusion, and urged the industry to maintain a more balanced stance in political contributions.
