Utah Attorney General Sues Kalshi, Alleging Online Gambling Constitutes a Public Nuisance, Seeks Up to $60 Million in Damages
On October 21, according to KUTV, Utah Attorney General Derek Brown announced on Tuesday that a civil lawsuit has been filed against prediction market platform Kalshi and several of its affiliated companies, alleging that its online services constitute a public nuisance. The lawsuit was filed in the Third District Court of Utah.
Brown alleges that Kalshi provided services to more than 32,000 verified users in Utah, violating the state's anti-gambling laws and causing "significant and continuing harm" to a large number of residents.
The state requests that the court order Kalshi to cease offering online betting related to sports, elections, politics, culture, and "mention" categories, and allow the use of geolocation services to enforce the injunction. The complaint also seeks up to $60 million in damages.
