Developer: The next Bitcoin network soft fork has an 80% probability of being BIP-54.
On November 5, citing Decrypt, Bitcoin developer Matt Corallo stated on the MARA Foundation TV show that he estimates there is an 80% chance the next Bitcoin network soft fork will be a "major consensus cleanup" (BIP-54). The proposal was introduced in 2019 to address four longstanding vulnerabilities in Bitcoin's consensus rules, including flaws in the difficulty adjustment mechanism and denial-of-service attack vectors among miners.
Corallo stated that BIP-54 addresses "a problem everyone agrees on" while also providing a practical exercise for developers who have not yet gone through a soft fork. Paul Sztorc, co-founder of LayerTwo Labs, described the upgrade on X as a "clean maintenance fork that does nothing." Based on his poll of developers at TABconf, most anticipate the soft fork will activate as early as September 2027, with a larger group pointing toward 2028 or later.
