JPMorgan Research Analysis: Microsoft Maia 300 Inference Performance Up 40%, Million-Chip Deployment Cuts Costs

On October 12, Microsoft announced that the Maia accelerator family will expand to multi-gigawatt deployments starting in 2027, with Maia becoming the primary inference system for Microsoft's products and services. The third-generation Maia 300 is slated for production in 2027, offering 40% more tokens per megawatt than leading GPU systems, and achieving a rack-level token throughput seven times that of Maia 200 under a full 96-accelerator configuration.
A JPMorgan report released on October 12, 2026, noted that Reuters reported Microsoft plans to deploy over 1 million Maia 300 chips by 2027 to support internal AI services. JPMorgan maintains its Overweight rating on Microsoft with a price target of $625. Maia 200 is already supporting Copilot production workloads, with GitHub Copilot and Microsoft Foundry expected to follow suit by year-end.
Maia Becomes the Primary Inference System
Microsoft plans to scale the Maia family to multi-gigawatt deployments, commencing production in 2027. Maia will serve as the primary inference platform for Microsoft's products and services. Maia 200 is already powering Microsoft Copilot and supporting the MAI team in developing next-generation models. GitHub Copilot and Microsoft Foundry are expected to follow suit by late 2026.
Microsoft already has experience supporting OpenAI models, MAI models, and leading open-source model families. JPMorgan believes that the shift of the Maia family from a secondary role to the primary inference system represents a key change in Microsoft's AI infrastructure strategy.
Multi-gigawatt deployments mean Maia will not only service internal workloads but also support the overall inference demands of Microsoft Cloud. JPMorgan expects Maia deployments to primarily focus on internal use cases rather than pursuing external compute revenue. The most direct impact visible to investors will be in capital expenditure intensity and cloud software cost of goods sold.
Significant Performance Leap for Maia 300
Maia 300 delivers 40% more tokens per megawatt than leading GPU systems. Under a full 96-accelerator configuration, its rack-level token throughput is seven times that of Maia 200. Maia 200 achieves 1.7 times more tokens per watt than traditional GPU infrastructure when leveraging built-in AI capabilities.

The performance leap stems from software-defined data flow and compute architecture innovations. Hardware breakthroughs include a chiplet architecture, delivering higher per-watt high-bandwidth memory (HBM) bandwidth, along with vertically scaled networks at the data center level.
JPMorgan notes that the increased token throughput of Maia 300 directly enhances Copilot performance while lowering the cost per compute unit. Microsoft Cloud gross margins currently sit in the mid-to-high range of 60% to 70%, and Maia deployments are expected to further improve these margins.
The software-defined data flow of Maia 300 optimizes data movement efficiency for inference tasks. Compute architecture innovations include a chiplet design that boosts per-watt HBM bandwidth. Vertically scaled networks enable inference clusters at the data center scale. Together, these innovations drive performance gains and cost reductions.
Million-Chip Deployment Supports Cost Reduction
Reuters reported that Microsoft plans to deploy over 1 million Maia 300 chips by 2027. Microsoft also aims to more than triple its global data center capacity by 2032. JPMorgan projects that Microsoft's data center capacity will exceed 30 gigawatts by 2030.
Large-scale deployment of the Maia family chips, coupled with data center capacity expansion, is expected to drive a superior cost structure. JPMorgan forecasts Microsoft's capital expenditures to be approximately $210 billion in fiscal year 2027, and around $175 billion in the calendar year 2026.
JPMorgan believes that because Maia deployments focus on internal use cases, the impact will be reflected in capex intensity and cloud software COGS. Million-chip scale deployments, combined with data center capacity expansion, will optimize Microsoft's overall infrastructure costs.
The million-chip deployment corresponds to multi-gigawatt capacity. With a 40% increase in tokens per megawatt for Maia 300, inference throughput increases significantly under equivalent power conditions. JPMorgan estimates Microsoft's data center capacity will reach over 30 gigawatts by 2030, with capital expenditures around $210 billion in FY2027. Scale effects and improved chip efficiency will jointly drive down unit inference costs.
Cloud Gross Margins Expected to Improve
As the primary inference system, Maia will enhance Copilot performance while lowering the cost per compute unit. Microsoft Cloud gross margins currently reside in the 60% to 70% mid-to-high range. JPMorgan believes Maia deployments have the potential to improve these margins.
Maia deployments are centered on internal use cases, with external compute revenue not being a priority. Investors are focused on capital expenditure intensity and cloud software COGS. JPMorgan anticipates that Maia deployments will optimize Microsoft Cloud's cost structure and boost gross margins.
JPMorgan maintains its Overweight rating on Microsoft with a price target of $625. The performance enhancements of Maia 300 and the million-chip deployment plan underscore Microsoft's long-term competitiveness in AI infrastructure. Declining inference costs and improving cloud gross margins remain key observation points.
