OpenAI plans to offer GPT-5.6 Sol Pro for free to 100,000 researchers.

According to Watchful AI monitoring, OpenAI has launched ChatGPT for Academic Researchers, with a plan to offer advanced models and research tools to 100,000 researchers for free by 2027. The first 10,000 individuals will receive access this summer, starting with GPT-5.6 Sol Pro, ChatGPT Work, and Codex.

Participants will also receive increased Deep Research credits, higher usage limits, and longer context. The platform features over 75 life science skills, as well as integration with paper repositories, public genomic databases, and computational notebooks.

This benefit is not available to all university members. Applicants must be from research-oriented universities selected by OpenAI, and must verify their affiliation, ongoing projects, and scientific use cases. Once approved, they can invite up to 4 collaborators from the same institution, with data being by default not used for training.
