YC Startup Faces Criticism for Offering Interviews in Exchange for Tattoos: 7 Candidates Exit with Permanent Ink, Founder Issues Apology

According to SnoopBeat monitoring, YC's 2026 Summer batch AI startup LemonLime hosted a party in San Francisco where a tattoo artist was present, offering to give tattoos of the company's related designs to individuals for a "direct interview." LemonLime focuses on helping small businesses create AI automated workflows.

Co-founder Jordan Zietz later posted that 7 people left with permanent tattoos. He also wrote that anyone with a LemonLime tattoo would receive an immediate interview and reminded prospective applicants to "take notes."

After facing criticism, Zietz deleted the original post and issued an apology. He acknowledged that linking permanent tattoos to job opportunities overlooked the pressure on job seekers and the power dynamics at play. The interview is not contingent on having a tattoo and the company is willing to cover tattoo removal costs for those who regret their decision.

Currently, all 7 participants have either completed or scheduled their interviews and are still in the recruitment process.
