eBay Rejects GameStop Acquisition Proposal, New Account Predicts eBay Will Announce Acquisition within the Year
According to PolyBeats monitoring, on the prediction market Polymarket, a new account has placed a $7.5k bet on "Will GameStop acquire eBay by December 31, 2026?" with an average buy-in probability of 13.3%. The current probability for "Yes" is 12.5%.
The market will resolve to "Yes" as long as by December 31, 2026, 23:59 ET, GameStop or eBay officially announce that eBay will be acquired or merged with GameStop. Holding only a minority stake, expressing an intention, or not gaining control does not automatically meet the conditions; if taking a partial acquisition route, GameStop must acquire a controlling interest sufficient to make strategic decisions about eBay.
On May 3, GameStop formally proposed to acquire 100% of eBay at $125 per share, with a total equity value of approximately $55.5B, and disclosed that they had established an economic interest of about 5% through stocks and derivatives. At that time, GameStop stated that the transaction was intended to be supported by approximately $9.4B in cash and liquid investments, along with up to $20B in acquisition financing from TD Securities; on June 26, the company further indicated that management was still advancing the proposed acquisition, with more materials to be released later.
However, eBay's board officially rejected this non-binding proposal on May 12, stating that the offer was "neither credible nor attractive," and specifically pointing out uncertainties in the financing scheme, post-merger leverage and operational risks, as well as governance and management incentives issues. eBay also mentioned that they had not engaged in prior contact or negotiations with GameStop before receiving the proposal.
This is not the first time this account has predicted a "Yes." Approximately 3 months ago, when GameStop first announced the acquisition proposal for eBay, this account also bought into the "Yes" position but exited at a $2k loss.
