SpaceX Short Sellers Could Face Squeeze as Stock Surges, Record Options Trading Indicates Renewed Capital Influx

Aug 9, 08:39

August 9th. With SpaceX's stock price seeing a sharp rebound for two consecutive days in the second half of this week, investors who had previously bet on a price drop are now under significant pressure. Currently, over 250 million shares of SpaceX stock are still shorted, equivalent to approximately 16% of the currently tradable shares. Once the stock price rises rapidly, short sellers may be forced to cover their positions, potentially further boosting the stock price.

At the same time, trading in the SpaceX options market has also been unusually active. As of 1:50 pm on Friday afternoon New York time, the volume of SpaceX options reached 2.24 million contracts, with the volume of call options reaching 1.3 million contracts, hitting a historical high, indicating that funds are flowing back in.

However, a rapid stock price rebound does not necessarily mean that the market's concern about SpaceX's high valuation has disappeared. As the supply impact from the unlocking gradually dissipates, investors still need to face a key question: before SpaceX fully realizes the potential of its AI, satellite internet, and space business, is the market willing to continue paying a very high valuation for it.
