SK Hynix Considers Selling Chongqing Plant Stake to Support South Korea Domestic Investment
August 9th, SK Hynix is reportedly exploring options to bring in external investors or sell a partial stake in its Chongqing factory in China, with the factory valued at around $3 billion. The factory serves as SK Hynix's key semiconductor backend base in China. The discussions are still at an early stage, and the transaction is not guaranteed to be finalized.
This asset adjustment has attracted attention mainly because SK Hynix is concurrently advancing a large-scale domestic expansion plan in Korea. The company had previously announced significant investments in its Icheon semiconductor cluster and Cheongju production base to build capacity for next-generation DRAM memory and high-bandwidth storage. Against the backdrop of AI-driven growth in storage chip demand, if the Chongqing factory equity transaction proceeds, it is expected to enhance asset operational efficiency and strengthen domestic investment funding security.
