OpenAI's Head of Ethics Quietly Resigns Less Than a Year After Joining

According to 动察 Beating monitoring, OpenAI's Head of Ethics, Chloé Bakalar, has resigned in July, less than a year after joining the company. The company did not publicly announce her departure. The Financial Times, citing sources familiar with the matter, reported that she was OpenAI's sole dedicated ethicist, and there is currently no successor. OpenAI later confirmed her departure, stating that ethical work is now shared across multiple model development teams.

Before joining OpenAI, Bakalar spent 6 years at Meta, where she served as the Chief Ethicist. At OpenAI, her primary focus was on ethical considerations in model development, human-AI interactions, and machine consciousness.

Around the time of her resignation, Head of Security Systems Johannes Heidecke also announced his departure. Former Alignment Lead Joshua Achiam had resigned in July.
