SEC Cancels Key Crypto Regulation Meeting, Adding Further Uncertainty to Crypto Regulation

Aug 14, 16:14

August 14, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) today canceled a public meeting scheduled for Friday, which was supposed to discuss a proposed custom issuance system for crypto asset investment contracts. The SEC stated that the reason for the cancellation was "unforeseen scheduling conflicts" and did not provide further details. This move comes as the Senate has entered its August recess without a full chamber vote on the Crypto Market Structure Act (i.e., the CLARITY Act), further clouding the outlook for crypto market structure legislation.

SEC Chairman Paul Atkins had previously made it clear in an interview with CNBC on July 27 that if the Senate fails to pass the CLARITY Act, the SEC is "ready, willing, and able" to introduce rules on digital assets. The timing of this meeting cancellation coincides with the Senate recess, and the market is watching to see if the SEC will move forward with crypto regulation independently of the legislative path. The CLARITY Act had missed the pre-recess voting window due to a dispute over the enforcement authority of ethical provisions, making the SEC's next steps in the legislative deadlock the short-term focus of the crypto industry.
