China's gold imports this year have exceeded 1,000 tons, with investment hitting a record high.
September 23, according to the Financial Times, China's gold imports this year have exceeded 1,000 tons, with investment reaching a record high. As of August, China had spent approximately $15.88 billion on gold imports (over 1,000 tons), far exceeding last year's full-year total of $9.65 billion (corresponding to 886 tons). This is China's largest gold import expenditure to date.
Analysts believe that the main reasons for China's massive gold purchases include: intensifying external geopolitical tensions, and both central banks and private investors accelerating the shift of reserves and savings into gold as a long-term wealth preservation tool.
The report noted that China itself is also the world's largest gold producer (with output of 384 tons last year). Gold prices have risen sharply from approximately $2,625 per ounce in early 2025, further stimulating gold purchase demand. Analysts believe that as long as economic and geopolitical uncertainties persist, this trend may continue.
