a16z letter to CFTC: supports listing compute derivatives in the US, says existing regulatory framework already covers them
a16z recently submitted a public comment letter to the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) in response to the CFTC's request for comment on listing compute derivatives contracts, saying it supports establishing a regulated compute derivatives market in the United States. Such derivatives would help AI startups and cloud service providers hedge compute price, utilization and tenor risk, and would lower the cost of financing AI infrastructure.
a16z said the CFTC needs no new statutory authority — the Commodity Exchange Act (CEA), the Part 38 core principles and the Part 40 self-certification process are sufficient, and no new rules are needed before listing. The letter recommended that the CFTC rely on the existing regulatory framework, support compute price benchmarks that comply with International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) principles, and allow exchanges to launch cash-settled compute futures, including term futures and perpetual contracts. a16z crypto is an investor in Ornn, and ICE announced in May that it plans to launch GPU compute futures based on the Ornn Compute Price Index (OCPI).

Decentralized cloud computing network Akash has launched governance proposal 346, seeking to migrate the network from its Cosmos sovereign chain akashnet-2 to the Solana mainnet. The proposal sets no switchover date, and the market migration requires a separate switchover proposal. Akash said it chose Solana mainly because of operating costs under load, the absence of a single operator and the concentration of the DePIN ecosystem, among other factors.
OpenAI announces three new AI scientific discoveries, says it has disproven the Exponential Time Hypothesis
Its internal models have made three new discoveries in mathematics, computer science and physics. One of the models proved that the Exponential Time Hypothesis (ETH), used as a computational hardness assumption in hundreds of papers, is false; the result has been formally verified in Lean and will be checked by a group led by the hypothesis's proposers Russell Impagliazzo and Ramamohan Paturi along with MIT professor Ryan Williams. The model also proved the local smoothing conjecture in arbitrary dimensions, thereby resolving the Kakeya conjecture and the Stein restriction conjecture; in physics, it provided a rigorous existence proof for four-dimensional quantum field theories including quantum chromodynamics, including an existence proof for pure Yang-Mills theory tied to a Millennium Prize problem, to be checked by a group led by Nobel laureate in physics David Gross. These results still await independent verification by the academic community.
