Chinese Team Sets 3.2 Pb/s Real-Time Fiber Transmission World Record, Nearly 30% Faster in Under a Year

October 27 — According to Science and Technology Daily, the State Key Laboratory of Optical Communication Technologies and Networks under China Information and Communication Technologies Group, together with Peng Cheng Laboratory and FiberHome Fujikura Optical Fiber Technology Co., Ltd., completed a 3.2 Pb/s multi-core fiber real-time bidirectional transmission trial, setting a world record for bidirectional real-time optical transmission capacity on a single fiber.

The rate surpasses the 2.5 Pb/s record set by the same team earlier this year by nearly 30%, equivalent to downloading more than 20,000 4K movies in one second, or supporting 3.2 million households using gigabit broadband simultaneously.

The trial used a 10.3-km-long 24-core multi-core fiber, combining S+C+L three-band multiplexing with space-division multiplexing. Conventional C+L band commercial single-core G.652 fiber has a capacity ceiling of about 100 Tb/s, and the system's total single-fiber capacity is 32 times that.

The results have been submitted to the Journal of Lightwave Technology.
