EU Tech Chief: EU Already Capable of Countering "Rogue AI" Risks
On October 10, according to Cointelegraph, Henna Virkkunen, the EU Commissioner responsible for technology, stated that the EU is currently "well equipped" to withstand the risks posed by "rogue AI" and advanced models.
She noted that the AI Act, passed by the EU two years ago, has already established effective safety guardrails. As the world’s first comprehensive AI legislation, it officially took effect this August, requiring companies to conduct risk assessments and mitigation measures before deploying AI systems.
Addressing external concerns that rapid technological iteration could lead to unpredictable consequences, Virkkunen emphasized in an interview with Finnish broadcaster Yle that losing human control over AI constitutes an extremely serious threat. She believes that, with the existing legal framework and a risk-based regulatory mechanism, the EU is fully capable of ensuring security risks are properly managed while advancing technological innovation.
