CoreWeake seeks insurance funding for AI expansion, with chip financing already exceeding $35 billion
According to a Financial Times article on October 14, Nvidia-backed AI cloud provider CoreWeave is seeking to tap into the massive capital pools of insurance companies to reduce its financing costs for purchasing AI chips and building infrastructure. Blanning McMeeki, CoreWeave co-founder and head of financing, stated that if the company can secure investment-grade ratings for more chip-backed debt and ultimately improve its own credit rating, it will have the opportunity to enter the insurance capital market. He noted that the scale of capital in the insurance industry is “virtually infinite,” because “the funds residing in insurance pools represent one of the largest funding sources in the world.”
Earlier this year, CoreWeave secured an $8.5 billion loan backed by Nvidia chips and long-term contracts with Meta. CoreWeave’s next move is to attract insurers to buy loans supported by lower-rated clients, such as those tied to AI lab financings. Year-to-date, the company has raised over $35 billion through methods including chip-secured mortgages, high-yield bonds, convertible bonds, and equity offerings. As of the end of June, its debt and lease obligations totaled approximately $52 billion.
