Dragonfly Partner Refutes Reports of Polymarket CEO Misappropriation: Cites Accounting Issue, Not Integrity Concerns
Oct 21, 12:39
On October 21 that Dragonfly Managing Partner Haseeb Qureshi (@hosseeb) posted on the X platform, addressing earlier reports that Polymarket CEO Shayne Coplan used company funds to pay for private jet flights. He called the report a "hit piece." The report stated that Founders Fund under Peter Thiel discovered the related expenses, which Qureshi denied.
Qureshi stated that Dragonfly is one of the earliest major investors in Polymarket and provided the following clarification:
- Coplan was only 21 years old when he founded the company, initially working out of his apartment without a salary and facing financial constraints; Dragonfly had issued the first term sheet and expressed willingness to lend him personal funds, but this was ultimately unused after the seed round was secured.
- The related expenses were proactively disclosed by Coplan; annualized, they equate roughly to a software engineer's salary, and none of the flights were private.
- The accounting and reimbursement processes were initiated by Coplan himself, rather than being "discovered" by others; the full amount has been repaid to the company, and since then he has been compensated at a standard salary rate.
- He stated that this falls under accounting issues during the pandemic and regulatory pressure periods in the crypto industry, does not involve integrity concerns, and investors have full confidence in Coplan.
