BAT Surges 95% in a Week, Funding Rate Turns Negative: Resurgence of Older Coins or Fuel for Shorts?

An old coin that had been dormant for over half a year, with a market cap of less than $300 million, suddenly exploded in the second week of October. BAT (Basic Attention Token) surged from $0.078 on September 13 to touch $0.205 on October 13, posting a monthly gain of over 124%. The steeper price action was concentrated in the final week: a single-day spike of 34% on October 9, a 60% one-day surge in perpetual contract open interest (OI) on October 10, and another 10% single-hour pump on October 13.

Throughout the entire process, BTC fell 1%, and the broader market cap shrank by 1.5%. BAT pumped against the trend.

A more noteworthy signal is: while the price is rising, the perpetual contract funding rate remains persistently negative.

This means shorts are more crowded than longs, with shorts continuously paying fees to longs. As prices move up, shorts are forced to close their positions, which themselves become buying pressure, pushing prices higher further—a classic "short squeeze" scenario.

The question is: does this rally actually have fundamental backing?

In Three Months, Brave Has Played Three Cards in Succession

Tracing back the narrative background of BAT's recent rally, there is a clear timeline:

On July 9, Brave released the BAT Roadmap 4.0. This is the largest roadmap iteration since 2017, with a core pivot repositioning BAT from a "token for earning rewards by watching ads" to an "attention payment infrastructure for the AI era."

Four key product directions were launched simultaneously:

First, support for the x402 protocol and the Machine Payments Protocol (MPP), enabling AI agents to autonomously execute micro-payments within the Brave browser. This directly integrates BAT into 2026's hottest narrative track: AI agents.

Second, BravePay, a privacy-focused stablecoin payment protocol layer supporting self-custody, .Brave addresses, and GENIUS Act-compliant stablecoins.

Third, the Brave Rewards Card, a physical payment card that allows users to earn BAT rewards upon purchase, and conversely, spend BAT for daily transactions. This effectively expands the token's use cases beyond the browser into offline retail.

Fourth, the Creator Contribution Protocol, whose core mechanism is: when AI platforms use creators' content for training or inference, micro-payments are automatically distributed to creators via the BAT blockchain ledger. This taps into the global public issue of "AI copyright compensation" that will dominate 2026.

On August 3, the Brave Rewards Card waitlist officially opened. This is the first tangible product rollout following the Roadmap 4.0 release. Although issuing partners and available regions remain undisclosed, it gives the community a concrete benchmark to anticipate.

In early October, BAT began to be discussed as a potential chain-key token candidate for the Internet Computer (ICP). If realized, BAT would gain native cross-chain integration capabilities, further expanding its use cases.

The common thread across these three cards is clear: Brave aims to evolve BAT from "browser points" into a "cross-platform payment token." AI micro-payments, physical card spending, creator compensation, and cross-chain integration—each direction is doing the same thing: finding use cases for BAT beyond browser advertising.

Price Structure: Is the Rally Driven by Spot or Leverage?

Chart data presents a set of contradictory signals.

The bullish side: On October 9, BAT surged 34% in a single day, moving from $0.094 to $0.131. On October 12, it gained another 16% to reach $0.175. On October 13, it touched $0.205, posting a 24-hour gain of 33%. The daily price structure has completed a bear-to-bull swing structure conversion, breaking through two key resistance levels at the May high of $0.127 and the February high of $0.139. Trading volume reached $51.7M during the rally, confirming buyer participation.

The hesitation-inducing side: Data from October 10 shows OI skyrocketed 60% in a day, indicating a massive influx of leveraged positions. By October 12, although prices continued to rise, trading volume actually dropped 16%. This means spot buying pressure weakened during the latter part of the rally, with leverage taking over. The RSI has already hit 87.91, sitting in extreme overbought territory.

Negative funding rates deepen this contradiction further. Typically, funding rates should turn positive during sharp rallies (indicating crowded longs). But the opposite holds true for BAT: shorts are still adding to positions or holding firm, refusing to give up. There are two possible interpretations of this.

Bullish interpretation: Spot buying is so strong that shorts cannot react in time. Persistently negative funding rates indicate shorts are passively under pressure, leaving room for a short squeeze ahead. Negative funding rates combined with rising OI form a classic pattern signaling that "the short squeeze is not yet over."

Bearish interpretation: Shorts are not fools. Negative funding rates mean borrowing costs for shorts are decreasing (shorts are actually collecting interest instead). This structure could be smart money waiting for prices to hit targets before collectively dumping. Once spot buying dries up, leveraged longs will be the first to get liquidated.

Looking Back from $0.20: What BAT Still Needs to "Truly Revive"

BAT is currently trading near $0.20, a figure that needs to be viewed within a broader coordinate system.

BAT's all-time high was $1.939 in November 2021. The current price is down 90% from the ATH. Even with a 124% gain, BAT has merely bounced off historical bottom territory and still sits about 35% away from the local peak of $0.302 seen in January 2026.

With a market cap of around $300 million, BAT ranks roughly 120th on CoinMarketCap. For a token launched in 2017 featuring a product like the Brave browser with tens of millions of monthly active users, this valuation is severely compressed. Brave currently boasts over 50 million MAUs, and Leo AI has already integrated models from Anthropic, Meta, and others. Despite being a project with genuine products and a solid user base, BAT's valuation has long been priced like an "old coin without a narrative."

Roadmap 4.0 attempts to break this pricing logic. AI micro-payments, stablecoin payment cards, and creator compensation agreements—all of these narratives correspond to sectors where the market will command high premiums in 2026. Yet, all of this remains stuck in the roadmap phase. The Brave Rewards Card opened a waitlist but lacks a launch timeline. BravePay is merely a whitepaper concept with no code. Support for the x402 protocol is listed as "coming soon," devoid of specific dates.

The standard for reviving an old coin isn't a single pump; it's whether the narrative can be consistently delivered upon.

If Brave rolls out an actual Rewards Card product in Q4, or if BravePay launches its MVP, BAT's current rebound could shift from "emotion-driven" to "valuation re-rating." However, if the next three months remain confined to "roadmaps + waitlists," the 124% gain will simply provide shorts with a better entry price.
