Immutable Announces Transition to Ethereum Rollup: Migration to OP Stack in 2027, Block Time Reduced to 1 Second
Immutable announced plans to upgrade Immutable Chain from a custom Geth fork to an OP Stack-based Ethereum Rollup in mid-2027, reducing the block time from 2 seconds to 1 second and fully integrating Ethereum state proofs and data availability.

On November 6, 2026 (Beijing Time), the official team behind Web3 gaming public chain Immutable announced its underlying evolution roadmap, planning to upgrade Immutable Chain from a custom Geth fork to an OP Stack-based architecture by mid-2027.

According to the official announcement from Immutable, upon completion of the upgrade, the network will become a standard Ethereum Rollup. Block generation time will be reduced from 2 seconds to 1 second, and existing cross-chain relay solutions will be replaced with native Ethereum state commitments.

Saying Goodbye to Custom Fork Architecture, Integrating with Superchain Ecosystem Standards

Since its launch, Immutable Chain has relied on a deeply customized Go-Ethereum (Geth) fork codebase to maintain its underlying consensus and execution layers. Maintaining a private execution-layer fork requires the team to independently shoulder the heavy engineering burden of continuously synchronizing with Ethereum mainnet hard forks, applying patch adaptations, and performing underlying fixes.

By shifting to the OP Stack developer specifications, the underlying client and execution environment will align directly with the core Ethereum standards. Various Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) and core EVM upgrades can be integrated seamlessly without requiring secondary refactoring by the team, significantly reducing the long-term maintenance costs of the protocol.

Alongside the ecosystem migration, Immutable will formally integrate into the Optimism Superchain interoperability matrix.

Cleaning Up Native Cross-Chain Bridging, Introducing State Commitment Verification

The asset cross-chain settlement logic undergoes structural restructuring. Currently, native asset cross-chains on Immutable Chain rely on a multi-party message passing mechanism based on the Axelar cross-chain network. While this solution supports network interoperability, its trust foundation relies on signature authorization from intermediate network nodes.

The new architecture will reshape the bridging pipeline, using state commitments published directly to the Ethereum mainnet as the sole settlement cornerstone. The official roadmap plans to introduce Permissioned Fault Proofs in phases and integrate Zero-Knowledge Validity Proofs (ZK Validity Proofs) in subsequent engineering developments.

The underlying verification logic returns to the Ethereum Rollup mechanism. Final certainty for asset cross-chains is guaranteed directly by Ethereum mainnet consensus, severing security dependencies on external cross-chain relay protocols.

Block Time Accelerated to 1 Second, Withdrawal Periods and Transaction Costs Adjusted

Regarding gameplay interaction, the network block interval will be compressed directly from the current 2 seconds to 1 second. Confirmation latency for high-frequency on-chain actions will be halved, catering to the real-time state synchronization needs of action games and real-time card games.

Performance optimization comes with specific trade-offs. Since transaction states and proof data must be submitted directly to the Ethereum Data Availability (DA) layer, on-chain base transaction costs will see a slight increase compared to a pure sidechain model.

The native withdrawal mechanism changes accordingly. Following the standard dispute resolution process for Optimistic Rollups, migrating assets back to the Ethereum mainnet via the official native bridge will trigger a roughly 7-day anti-fraud challenge window. Immediate cross-chain demands will require supplementary channels provided by external liquidity service providers.

Frictionless Seamless Migration, Testnet Support Tapering Off by Year-End

The network migration adopts a seamless state migration strategy. Existing Chain IDs, all user addresses, token balances, smart contract logic, and on-chain authorization records will be fully preserved. Developers and players alike will not need to manually transfer assets or redeploy contracts during the migration period.

The formal cutover window is scheduled for mid-2027. At that time, the mainnet will halt block production for several hours to complete the underlying engine replacement. The exact downtime maintenance schedule will be announced to the community in advance.

Infrastructure cleanup runs concurrently. Immutable confirmed that support for game projects on the current testnet will be officially discontinued by the end of 2026. Game developers have largely shifted to local simulation nodes and production environment testing. Streamlining independent sandboxes allows the team to focus on preparations for the core mainnet cutover.
