Myanmar Enacts Tough Law Against Scams: Perpetrating Cryptocurrency Scams Could Lead to Life Imprisonment

July 28th. The Burmese Parliament on Tuesday passed a law allowing for the death penalty to be imposed on individuals who engage in online fraud using violence or illegal detention to coerce others. According to a bill released in May this year, if such abuse results in the victim's death, the offender "shall be sentenced to death."

The new law also stipulates that those operating online fraud schemes or committing "digital currency fraud (cryptocurrency fraud)" can be sentenced to life imprisonment, while offenders using violence for coercion or illegal detention can face sentences ranging from 10 years to life imprisonment.
