From Bean to Chip, ByteDance Aims to Reinvent Itself with AI
According to Omdia AI Revenue Market Tracker, ByteDance is now funneling the earnings from Douyin and TikTok into AI at a large scale. Douyin is just the entry point, as the company is also simultaneously working on foundational models, video generation, enterprise cloud, overseas data centers, and custom chips.
Douyin's monthly active users have reached 324 million. The foundational model team, Seed, has expanded to about 2,000 people, with the Volcano Engine accounting for 16% of China's AI cloud service revenue, ranking second. ByteDance is also advancing data centers in five countries and developing in-house designed inference chips.
In the past, ByteDance relied on algorithmic content distribution and ad sales for revenue. Now, it aims to bring models, applications, cloud services, and chips all in-house, transitioning from a traffic platform to a full-stack AI company.
