DigiTimes: DRAM and HBM Capacity Sold Out by 2027

August 4th, according to DigiTimes, the full-year 2027 DRAM and HBM capacity has been sold out in advance. Although the NAND flash memory supply is not as tight as DRAM, it is expected that its 2027 capacity allocation will also be fully booked by the end of this month.

Industry sources stated that some companies have not publicly acknowledged the need to lock in storage supply within this month, for fear that more manufacturers will join the capacity competition, further reducing their own quotas. Currently, storage manufacturers usually only deliver 60% to 70% of the initially requested quantity to customers, prioritizing the needs of cloud service providers and large AI companies.

As a result, it is expected that the amount of DRAM available to smartphone and PC manufacturers in 2027 will significantly decrease compared to 2026. DigiTimes reported that in a situation where capacity is almost fully sold out, companies that have not finalized their procurement volume for next year may face a more severe "even if you want to buy, you can't buy" situation.

The report also mentioned that high storage prices will become the norm. With the easing of capacity competition, the price increase in 2027 may be lower than the previous sharp rise, but the overall supply gap and the cost pressure borne by the end-product industry are still difficult to alleviate in the short term.
