Meme Superstar Suspected of Switching to Crypto Scam, Pepe's Original Creator Resets Password Three Times a Week Blaming CA for Hacked Account
August 10th - Renowned artist and Pepe creator Matt Furie's X account, after remaining silent for 9 months, suddenly became active in early August. Within a week, it was consecutively linked to three meme coin contract addresses. Subsequently, related tweets were mostly deleted. Finally, on August 9th, the account posted stating "account compromised, not endorsing any shitcoin," and mentioned that a disclaimer had long been present on its official website.
On August 1st, Matt Furie's account changed its avatar to the hoodrat image, simultaneously posting content related to the meme coin HOODRAT and its smart contract address. After the token's market value rapidly surged, the tweets were deleted, and the price plummeted.
On August 3rd, shortly after the deployment of the DORK token, Matt Furie's account posted the official smart contract address, cross-engaged with the project's account, and released Pepe artwork in collaboration with Dork Lord. Subsequent tweets were deleted. On-chain analysis by @StandartXBT indicated that the deployer swiftly carried out a buyback, liquidity pull, and sell-off, extracting significant ETH gains from the initial funds.
Around August 7th, Matt Furie's account posted in support of the meme coin project BOYZ, considering it the only token it would endorse, engaging in creative collaboration with the team, and providing the official website and smart contract address. The related content was widely shared by the project team and key opinion leaders.
On August 9th, Matt Furie's account posted stating "the answer has always been on my website," along with a screenshot of the official website (displaying text in a less prominent area of the sidebar stating "my twitter is hacked- i do not endorse any shitcoins"). Through monitoring web page archives, on-chain analyst @StandartXBT found that this text was not present on the archived versions of the website, and there were no previous traces of X searches, casting doubt on the credibility of the statement.
