Marinade: Service Provider Teraswitch Routing Error Nearly Triggers Solana Downtime This Morning

Aug 12, 19:10

August 12th, Solana staking platform Marinade Finance tweeted that the Solana network was on the brink of halt this morning: 28.83% of staked SOL experienced a blackout, nearing the 33.34% threshold for triggering a halt, involving 90 validation nodes, with a total loss of approximately 333 SOL rewards. The outage originated from a routing error by the service provider Teraswitch: a Miami node routing error was broadcasted to Europe and Asia-Pacific, causing 12 nodes (LON1, AMS1-3, DUB1-2, FRA2, SGP1-2, TYO1-3) to lose proper routing, while North America remained unaffected, and the issue was resolved 10 minutes later.

Marinade pointed out that AS20326, this ASN hosts over a quarter of the network's total staked amount, with 94% offline simultaneously during the outage, and the actual percentage of 27.34% has exceeded the 25% cap set by SFDP regulations; the network's second-largest node Helius was offline for 33 minutes in full, with only a few nodes achieving a smooth failover. Marinade stated that they will review the staking concentration limit and advocate for validation nodes to publicly disclose their failover capabilities.
