Hardware wallets suspected of being implanted with tampered modules; the probability of Ledger announcing compensation for losses within a week is only 17%.

According to PolyBeats monitoring, on October 9, Ledger stated it is investigating an incident involving the theft of user assets. , citing on-chain investigator Specter, reported that suspected losses on the Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Tron networks have exceeded $86 million; another security researcher, tanuki42, previously estimated losses exceeding $72 million.

Prediction market Polymarket today launched a new market: "Will Ledger announce compensation for user losses before the end of October 16?" The current probability of "Yes" is 17%; the probability of "announcing within October" is 28%.

Ledger has asked one of its distributors, CryptoBilis, to suspend sales and shipments, and reminded users who purchased related devices within the past 90 days not to initialize them for now; users who have already set up their devices should create a new signing device with a brand-new mnemonic phrase and transfer their assets.

On October 10, former Mt.Gox CEO Mark Karpelès disclosed a Ledger device from Malaysia that appeared to have been physically tampered with. He stated that a hidden module with LTE communication, an eSIM, and a microcontroller had been implanted in the device, which could read the content displayed on the screen and might send mnemonic phrase information after the user completes setup.
