Otter.ai Secures $320 Million in Funding: No Equity Sold, Repayment Through New Customer Revenue

Oct 20, 20:25

Beating AI News Flash: AI meeting notes company Otter.ai announced it has secured $320 million in growth financing from General Catalyst's Customer Value Fund.

But this is not traditional equity financing. The fund provides capital for sales and customer acquisition, then recovers principal and agreed returns from revenue generated by the relevant new customers. This model does not dilute existing shareholders' equity, and capital recovery is tied to customer acquisition results.

Otter.ai plans to expand its sales and marketing budget to 2 to 3 times the original amount, hoping to at least double enterprise business revenue by 2027. The company surpassed $100 million in annualized recurring revenue (ARR) as early as March 2025, but did not disclose its latest revenue figures this time.

Otter claims cumulative users exceeding 40 million, with 86% of Fortune 500 companies already having someone using its products. However, most of these users come from organic adoption and do not represent that enterprises have already paid. The company hopes to convert them into formal enterprise customers. On the product side, Otter has launched real-time AI assistance during meetings and is testing automatic pre-meeting briefings, attempting to leverage historical meeting data to provide more real-time Q&A capabilities.

The enterprise market still has a privacy barrier. On Reddit, enterprise IT administrators have discussed how to block Otter and other note-taking bots that automatically join meetings. Otter also faces a class-action lawsuit over allegedly recording without the consent of all participants. In August this year, a U.S. court allowed multiple privacy claims to proceed, but has not yet found the company in violation of the law.
