Anthropic Warns Energy Supply Bottlenecks Could Slow AI Expansion; Some Costs May Arise Before Compute Comes Online
October 27 — According to Semafor, Anthropic warned in its initial public offering (IPO) prospectus that electricity supply difficulties and persistently rising energy costs could slow the expansion of AI infrastructure. The company expects its already elevated energy spending to increase further.
The prospectus notes that power procurement negotiations, regulatory approvals, construction delays and cost overruns could all affect the pace of data center construction. Meanwhile, AI companies may be required to bear more of the cost of grid upgrades, even for facilities they do not directly use.
Anthropic specifically disclosed that, due to the structure of certain power and infrastructure contracts, it may still bear related costs even if the expected power capacity is delivered late or ultimately never materializes. Tight supplies of electrical equipment, rising project financing costs and counterparty execution risk could also further drive up operating expenses.
In addition, Anthropic warns that rising temperatures driven by climate change and wildfire risk could threaten data center infrastructure and increase the electricity and water costs needed to cool servers.
