Before IPO, Anthropic Warns of Trump Retaliation Risk: AI Safety Stance Could Invite Targeted Scrutiny
October 28 – According to Bloomberg, Anthropic warned in its IPO-related filings that its public advocacy for AI safety regulation and related remarks by its executives could expose the company to risks such as government pressure and selective scrutiny.
Anthropic said that even if other similarly situated companies are not treated the same way, Anthropic may still become a key target of specific government departments. This risk is tied to the company's multiple conflicts with the Trump administration, including a dispute that arose from its demand to impose safety restrictions on the U.S. Department of Defense's use of its AI technology, as well as disagreements over the safety of the Mythos model and export controls.
Anthropic also warned that future government intervention, export restrictions, and cybersecurity or biosecurity incidents triggered by AI models could all affect its product deployment, international expansion and business growth, and that the regulatory measures it advocates, once implemented, could also increase compliance costs, limit product development and releases, and slow its own growth.
