Bankless: Zcash Development Funding Surplus Sparks Debate as Four Proposals Target Block Reward Distribution
October 28 — Bankless has published an article discussing the controversy over Zcash's development funding surplus, noting that the Zcash development funding program's pool keeps growing, with net funding currently estimated at about $125 million, far exceeding current spending needs. Zcash co-founder and current Tachyon lead Sean Bowe has drafted a proposal recommending that a future network upgrade terminate the 8% block reward currently allocated to ZCG.
Four proposals on the development funding mechanism have now emerged in the community, covering ending ZCG grants, scrapping the entire development fund allocation mechanism, or gradually reducing the allocation ratio to zero. Supporters argue that the current mechanism causes funds to steadily accumulate as the ZEC price rises, yet ZCG is not directly controlled by coin holders; opponents worry that cutting development funding without an alternative could affect the protocol's continued development and maintenance. All proposals remain under discussion and have not yet been finalized.
