CFTC Chair Raises AI Agent Regulatory Questions: Is a "Know Your Agent" Rule Needed?
Oct. 29 — According to CoinDesk, the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) held an artificial intelligence forum on Wednesday. CFTC Chair Mike Selig said the convergence of superintelligence, cryptocurrency and modern financial infrastructure could transform markets, and AI agents are leading markets toward "autonomous trading." He also raised a series of regulatory questions, including whether developers of AI agents need to register, who bears responsibility when an agent goes out of control, how regulators can identify on whose behalf an agent is acting, and whether a new "Know Your Agent" (KYA) identification mechanism is needed. Selig said CFTC staff already make extensive use of AI to monitor derivatives markets, and crypto rulemaking could serve as a template for addressing these issues. No new AI rules or guidance were announced at the forum.
