Protests Erupt in Multiple European Countries Demanding a Halt to Data Center Construction
November 8 — A wave of protests against data center construction is spreading across many parts of Europe, according to Cailian Press. On Saturday local time, people in multiple countries took to the streets to express concerns about the energy consumption, environmental damage and social impact that the rapid expansion of data centers may bring.
More than 100 civil society organizations and advocacy groups from 15 European countries took part in the joint action, protesting the rapid expansion of energy-hungry data centers and calling for a pause on all new large-scale data center projects until clearer regulations are in place. About 2,000 people marched in Dublin on Saturday and about 1,300 gathered in Helsinki, with similar demonstrations held in several smaller towns in Finland. "Stop Dirty Data Centers," an alliance of local democracy and climate protest groups, said the action aimed to "stop the unconstrained expansion of AI data centers and prevent our democracies from being held hostage by the interests of Big Tech." Environmental and social activist groups from Scotland to Spain and from France to Denmark also joined the action, calling for a halt to data center construction.
