Korea's Ministry of Economy and Finance Holds Talks with Five Exchanges: No Clear Decision on Postponing or Repealing Virtual Asset Tax
On October 20, according to Yonhap News Agency, South Korea's Ministry of Economy and Finance held a symposium on virtual asset taxation with five exchange operators—Dunamu, Bithumb, DigitalX, Coinone, and Streami—and other entities including the Financial Services Commission. The meeting discussed current tax regulations, market conditions, and tax preparation measures, as well as the possibility of postponing or abolishing the tax, but no concrete decisions were reached.
According to reports, South Korea's virtual asset taxation policy was established in 2020, originally scheduled for implementation in 2022, and has since been repeatedly postponed to 2023, 2025, and 2027. The National Tax Service is currently preparing detailed regulations, but issues such as staking still require consultation with the Ministry of Economy and Finance. If the detailed rules are published next month, there will be only about two months remaining until the planned implementation date.
